The Old Man and the Sea

Abstract This paper delves into the concept of the story â€Å"The Old Man and the Sea† being connected to man’s fight against old age and time.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Old Man and the Sea specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Introduction When examining the story â€Å"The Old Man and the Sea† by Ernest Hemingway, readers would be hard pressed to find a single theme that can be considered as the main point of the novel. For example, it can be stated that the novel delves into the concept of the desire for acceptance as exemplified by the character of Santiago who was a Spaniard trying to integrate himself into the local culture of Cuba (Hemingway, 1952). On the other end of the spectrum it could also be stated that the novel itself delves into the philosophical and the metaphysical as exemplified by the scenes wherein Santiago considered the marlin as a brother or when he del ved into a distinct introspection about his life and how he got to where he was. It can also be stated that the novel itself has distinct religious overtones as evidenced by Santiago’s reference to the crucifixion in the scene where the sharks came to eat the body of the marlin. Yet, despite the sheer amount of possible references, it is the belief of the reader that this novel delves into the way in which the concept of man fights against the inevitable passage of time. Man and Time When examining the novel there are several pivotal scenes that exemplify the concept of man fight against time, these are: a.) Santiago’s fight with the Marlin b.) His desire to end his unlucky streakAdvertising Looking for research paper on american literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More c.) His stubbornness to simply not cut the line d.) Refusing to show his illness to Manolin. The events can be considered as character traits that many among the elderly possess wherein they attempt to fight against time. For example the stubbornness of Santiago to not cut the line is the same type of stubbornness seen by many of those with advanced ages wherein they refuse to give up certain activities despite the health risk involved. Refusing to show signs of illness is also a trait shared by Santiago and the elderly as well as the desire to end â€Å"their unlucky streaks† by accomplishing new activities. What must be understood is that while the age of Santiago is not outright stated, it can be seen within the novel that he has advanced considerably in age. The fact that he has not been able to catch fish is more likely due to his advanced age hampering his capabilities rather than through bad luck. It is based on this that his desire to end his unlucky streak is actually his desire to actively pursue activities that his advanced age would otherwise not permit. Thus, Santiago’s fight against the marlin is actually symbolic of how the some people fight against the passage of time. His stubbornness, determination and unwillingness to give up are all aspects shared by people in similar positions. This can be seen right till the end wherein Santiago refused to let Manolin know of his illness. In the end it can be assumed that Santiago, like all others before him, lost his battle with time and died, stubborn till the end. Conclusion Overall, it can be stated that this story was one that delved into the concept of man and time and how people stubbornly refuse to give in to the passage of time till the bitter end. Commercial Compromise essays

Commercial Compromise essays Dependent on British goods for the survival of their agricultural economy, the Southern States strongly opposed any attempts by Congress to tax foreign and interstate imports. This was seen as a direct affront to the South as well as to states' rights in general. Those who believed in a strong, powerful federal government favored import duties because the money raised bolstered the national economy. As the United States was still a new nation, federal monies were needed to fund infrastructures. However, the American economy was still regional in the decades immediately following the War of Independence. The North became increasingly industrial in nature and was largely self-sufficient. Northern states did not rely on foreign imports as much as the southern states did at the time. However, the south had been practicing a plantation economy for centuries and to suddenly impose a tax would burden many southern plantation owners and business men and severely cut into profits. The south felt that this would place them at an economic disadvantage and that the north would be heavily favored in the federal government. Therefore, the issue of taxation became one of the most I support the views of the north for several reasons and propose an interesting solution to this issue. First, I believe that as a new nation, all states and all citizens must make an effort to join forces and one of the ways of achieving this unity is through economic interdependence. The federal government needs to raise money from some kind of taxes; without a national pool of money there would be little need for a national government. One of the most convenient and reasonable ways to raise federal funds is through import tariffs. Moreover, import tariffs encourage domestic production of goods. Except for those goods that absolutely cannot be produced a t home, most of our nation's supply should come f ...

To prevent succumbing to debilitating illnesses. And why do we get our oil changed regularly even when our vehicles are (seemingly) running well?Right again! To prevent breaking down on the interstate and destroying our vehicles from the inside out. That’s exactly why writer’s block is best beat by preventing the darn thing in the first place! But how do you do that? It’s not like you can wash your brain or change its oil.Well, not in a literal sense, you can’t. But you can try a few of these methods to keep your creative juices flowing like Niagara Falls in the springtime.#1 Outline Your BookIf there’s one technique that’ll prevent writer’s block th e best, it’s having an outline. These handy tools you didn’t pay attention to creating in school are essentially roadmaps for your book. They cover what happens next and what specific information you need to include. There are a number of ways you can create your outline; using sticky notes, writing it in bullet points, or even using one thats attached to a writing software. How can you not know what to write next if you already have an outline telling you exactly that? Many of us are stuck and blocked simply because we’re not sure what we should be writing next. Your imagination is at a standstill. You may just be divided between which path your book could potentially take.Creating a thorough outline squashes those issues so you can write fluidly, quickly, and with quality. When you’re not focused on what to write next, you can turn your attention to the quality of your writing while pumping out those words much faster, rendering writer’s block inactiv e.Use a simple method like the one this student of ours used:The post-it note wall is one of our favorite methods of outlining here at Self-Publishing School. It allows you to consistently have eyes on whats happening next when your writing which can prevent writers block.#2 Research BeforehandThere’s nothing worse than getting into your writing groove only to freeze because you’re not 100% certain of the facts you’re putting down. Your mind goes blank and the words stop coming. But since you’ve outlined your book, you know what you’re going to write before you even type that first word. Which means you know the research you need to do beforehand.Having all the facts makes writing a breeze, and it can also kick-start some fresh ideas and a more imaginative way of thinking. Here are some of our tips for researching to get rid of writers block:Compile a list of what you dont knowHighlight or make note of the most important partsJot down why its causin g you to have writers blockMake a separate document for what you findStart researching by using .edu or .gov website (if your topics call for it)Write down everything you needed to knowLook it over one last time to determine that its all you needed to researchStart writing again to beat writers block!Knowing more about a subject enables you to better explain it and writer’s block will run screaming for the hills. #3 Form a Writing Habit to Beat Writers BlockHow often do you write right now? One day a week? A few days a week? The more you write, the more effortless writing becomes. It’s like running, or exercising in general- the more often you do it, the easier it gets. Not creating a writing routine those creative muscles. It makes it harder to think in an innovative way, and so you spend hours on a single page simply trying to find a better way to phrase something that’s not even critical to your story.Keep those writer muscles strong by writing as often as you can every day, even! If you’ve got the time to flex your creativity, do it.Using a tracking sheet like the one above is a great way to schedule out your goals and then execute in a way that makes you WANT to write every day.You can also schedule your writing time into your calendar to get alerts and notifications for you to stop and write. I’m blocked!†Most of the time, you may just be out of practice and need to find your rhythm again. Even if you’re struggling to get the words out, write them down anyway. You may not like it and you may go back to change what you wrote later, but it’s the single best way to force writer’s block into submission. It can’t win if you still write despite its grip on you.So get those words down and after a little while, writer’s block will scurry back into the darkest corner of your mind and stay there. Finding your flow is sometimes all you really need.Writer’s Block Action Step: If you’re feeling blocked with your current story, perform a writing exercise where you just describe your day in prose like you would writing. Make yourself the main character and craft y our day like you would a story in order to gain that momentum again.#2 ReadNothing can get your mind in a creative state more than reading. Picking up a book any kind of book and spending 30 minutes reading can spark your imagination and light a fire under you to get back to writing. It’ll also motivate and inspire you to work harder to reach your goal of publishing a book. When you’re holding someone else’s hard work in your hands, it’s proof your dream can come true. It’s justifying everything you’ve worked so hard for.You can also research books about writing in order to learn more about the craft. This can often help with insecurity so you feel ready to write again. Here are our top recommendations for book about writing to beat writers block:On Writing by Stephen KingThe Elements of Style by William StrunkOn Writing Well by William ZinsserWrite and Grow Rich by a collection of authorsZen in the Art of Writing by Ray BradburyThat may jus t be the push you need to shove writer’s block from your mind and get back to your work.Never underestimate the power of a good book.Writer’s Block Action Step:Grab your favorite book and spend 30 minutes reading it or until you feel inspired and ready to write again. Trust us, it works!#3 Get MovingExercise isn’t just great for your body, it’s also powerful for your mind.Scientifically speaking, exercising more not only increases your mood, but your creativity gets a boost as well! It’s not always easy to coerce yourself into going for a run or even doing a few sit-ups at home when you just settled into your comfy couch to write, but if writer’s block is preventing you from actually getting any productive wordsmithing done, it could make a huge difference. You can simply do some jumping jacks or take a quick walk around the block. Stimulating your creativity physically might just beat writer’s block for you!Writer’s Block Acti on Step:Get off your butt and do a few jumping jacks! Spend at least 3 minutes doing some sort of exercise, or even go for a full 30-60 minute workout before coming back to writing.#4 Take a Walk or a DriveMindless tasks help your brain get out of a funk because it frees it from focusing on your daily tasks, the insecurity you may feel about writer’s block, and even the pressure of finishing your book. The more you can let your mind go, the more creative it becomes. Plus, a change of scenery never hurts the creative process.Always looking at the same place or even sitting in the same spot to write can be an issue. It’s hard to come up with new ideas and think creatively when you never have anything new fueling your imagination.Taking a walk or going for a short drive can help you recharge so you can kick that writer’s block to the curb and get back to writing again.Writer’s Block Action Step:Put on those shoes and hit the pavement. Take 10 minutes and obs erve your surroundings. Pick one thing you see outside and throughout the duration of your walk, craft a story in your mind focusing on that object.#5 Talk it OutAre you struggling with something specific? Sometimes the confines of your own mind isn’t the best place to work through your writer’s block. You may be the type of person who needs to verbalize your concerns in order to work through them. And that means you need to get up and actually speak to someone (or even yourself!) about what you’re struggling with.Writer’s block feeds on uncertainty. The more you question what you’re doing, the worse it’ll get.By talking through it out loud, you’ll have a new perspective. This will often offer fresh solutions that’ll make you eager to get back to that keyboard.Writer’s Block Action Step: Try to get your critique partner on the phone or active via messenger. Tell them what’s going on and even ask if they want to ta ke a look at where you left off to bounce ideas off each other.#6 Find InspirationThere are a lot of ways you can go about getting inspired again. While inspiration isn’t necessarily required to write, it certainly helps your drive and imagination. These are a few ways to get rid of writers block if you feel lost:Research related images on PinterestRead through your outlineRead a related bookCreate a vision board for your bookCreate a list of goals for after your book is completeListen to an influential PodcastWatch or read successful author interviewsInspiration is specific to each person. Meaning, it may take a few attempts before finding the method that works best for you.As an example, whenever I feel stuck or blocked when writing, I open my Pinterest board dedicated to my book and often find this helps.Heres an example of what a board for your book may look like in order for you to beat writers block.A Pinterest board like this really just serves to bring your book to re ality. When you see what it could look like in the minds of others, it helps you get back on the writing train.Anything that rouses your excitement to write again tramples that pesky writer’s block.Writer’s Block Action Step:Get on Pinterest or just Google and look up images that are reminiscent of your book, theme, or story. Compile a folder or board of these and notice the details that make them related to your book.#7 Put Your Phone Away! Are you really experiencing writer’s block or is that â€Å"block† in the shape of your phone?A lot of us love to use the excuse of â€Å"writer’s block† in order to justify spending far too much time perusing our social feeds. While there’s nothing wrong with wanting to catch up with friends and stay in the know, sometimes it can drag you away from achieving the goal of writing your book. What you need may not be a cure for writer’s block at all, but something completely different: self-cont rol. There are even apps for this now! Going to your phone every now and then can be a bad habit, but apps like Freedom help you stay on track.Freedom works by blocking your ability to access different websites or apps on your phone. This is what it looks like when you attempt to go online or open an app that you have disabled through Freedom:If you struggle to focus on the task of writing and you somehow always find your phone open to a mind-sucking app, it’s a good idea to switch your phone to silent and shove it aside for the remainder of your writing time. This alone might be enough to get rid of what’s really blocking your stream of words.Writer’s Block Action Step: Put your phone in a completely different room and on silent. This will stop you from opening your phone just to scroll and will block any other messages from distracting you until you’re done writing.#8 Reread Your WritingAs mentioned above, getting into a rhythm is essential for keeping w riter’s block at bay. When you suddenly can’t come up with the right words to describe what’s going on in your mind, it could be because you’ve lost momentum.Taking some time to reread your previous writing can help by putting you in the same frame of mind you were in the last time you had to stop writing. This will catapult your brain back into the right place so you can make progress and write easily again.Writer’s Block Action Step:Head back to the beginning of your current chapter (or the beginning of the previous one if you’re just starting a new one) and just read. Allow your mind to get lost in your own words. You can go further back to read if needed.#9 Stop Comparing Your Writingâ€Å"Comparison is the thief of joy.†Theodore Roosevelt knew as much and we’d wager to bet it also steals any progress you could be making. The more you worry about how your writing compares to someone else’s (who usually has much more experience than you), the harder it will be to write anything. That’s where writer’s block comes from in this instance. You’ll find fault with every word and every sentence even though your work is fantastic the way it is.Remember that nobody can write the story you are. Your voice and perspective are what makes your book unique in the first place. Changing this will only pull you further away from your identity as a writer. And most importantly, comparing your writing to someone else’s isn’t productive or helpful for anyone.Writer’s Block Action Step:Write down 10 things you love about your writing. Get specific and mention why you love your dialogue or why your theme is so unique and special. Recognize your own strengths and then say them out loud to yourself.#10 Think of the Big PictureWriting and publishing a book can be a long, hard process. Sure, the first week is exciting and you want to write all the words but that motivation probably won’t last through the entire process because it is work, after all. You’ll have rough days including moments when writer’s block takes hold. What’ll get you through them the easiest is taking a step back and thinking about the big picture.Ask yourself some of these questions to get rid of writers block:Why did you want to write this story? How will it benefit you?How will it benefit others? What message do you hope others receive? What value does this hold in your life?Pushing yourself to view your writing in terms of the end goal will not only motivate you to get started and put some words down, but it’ll also help remind you of your true purpose for telling this story.Writer’s Block Action Step:Write down the answers to the questions above in detail. Then read them out loud to yourself, really hear your own purpose for this book and that can often unclog your writer brain. How Long Does Writer’s Block Last?Writer’s block lasts a s long as you allow it to, which can often be days or even weeks if you don’t act on it and try these preventative and curing methods.Ultimately, the longer you put off dealing with the underlying causes of writer’s block, the longer it will last.Face your writer’s block head-on in order to get rid of it for good and get back to creating something that will resonate with people from all over.Overcome Writer’s Block by Staying InformedThe more you know, the less you have to worry about and since that is such a major cause of writer’s block, we’re offering you this FREE training where Chandler Bolt walks you through exactly what you need to know to write, market, and self-publish your book within 90 days!

International Security in the Global Era Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

International Security in the Global Era - Essay Example of invulnerability of the basic vital interests of the global community, the interests, for protecting of which it will rather start the war, than look for compromises. In other words, global security is a strategy, directed at providing the vitally important interests of the global community. This is the classical realistic approach to the issue. (Buzan 2003, p. 11) It should be reminded, that from the viewpoint of political realism, international relations always exist in the shadow of the war. Thus, the main means of achieving and protecting international security in realism and neorealism is supposed to be force (in its military and political dimension) and the main instrument for guaranteeing international security – is the balance of forces. (Lawrence 1998, p. 49) There also exists and is developed the understanding of the international security based on the liberal-idealistic paradigm. One of the central notions of this paradigm is the idea of international cooperation, based on universal values and general human interests. From these positions, the threat is presented by those participants of international relations, which refuse from cooperation and break the generally accepted moral and legislative norms. Collective security is the only way for overcoming the security dilemma, which goes through creation and strengthening of international institutions, further improvement of international law and following the generally accepted moral norms. (Buzan 2003, p. 44) The notion of collective security is the main and the most operational in the total security complex. Collective security is the situation, under which all members of certain community refuse from applying force in relations with each other and agree to give any assistance to each participating state, which has been attacked by any state of the mentioned community. International security at present time should meet a number of conditions, which are very difficult to accomplish. They may be

ICTs in Global Context Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

ICTs in Global Context - Essay Example Such applications refer to the government online (E-Government), the introduction of the Electronic Voting System, the expression of the people’s opinion regarding a certain political decision by signing an on-line petition, as well as to the information and publicity developed on the Internet, in the electronic mail and throughout the informatics technologies.† (Annals, 2005 University of Craiova). But many argue that there an increase in the benefits of any country as a result of the spread of capitalism. ICTs have the ability to fast-track any country’s participation in the global politics and decision making policies. ICTs give any government domination over the policies due to extensive financial and technical resources, to facilitate in its global presence, and helping in ggrowth of a new entrepreneurial class with innovative corporate practices. If the FOSS model is applied then any country’s government has control over its ICT infrastructure, in ter ms of security, support and development and cost thereby increasing development and employment means. Also the government has open standards and open formats now, allowing for international co-operation. Theorists have different views about the effect that ICTs have on politics. Hyperglobalists think that due to ICTs political power becomes transferred into the hands of those which do not deserve it. Transformationalists think that ICTs cause the power of the government to become uneven and multilayered as they reconstitute and restructure their power. Skeptics state that ICTs are overstatement that only serves to extend policies and cause unrest in the country as a result of a power upsurge. Critiques argue that ICTs cause privatizations.... The wide spread use of ICTs has changed the world much, whether to our liking or not, is still to decides. Most of it is certainly in our favor. But nothing good in this world comes without a price. ICTs promote globalization which refers to the accelerated worldwide intermeshing of states and the closer integration of economies and cross-border traffic and communication becoming denser. It is also the process whereby individual lives and local communities are affected by economic and cultural forces that operate worldwide. ICTs allow poor states to come edge to edge with the developed countries and promote better communication. It can even give the states a place in the global economic picture. But are most of the benefits good enough to account for all the bad that is brought about by the ICTs. Due to ICTs a different category of ‘information poor’ states is formed. States run after information that is categorized as valuable information and knowledge and beats the oth ers for it at all costs increasing the already deep world-wide unrest. In many places the western structures of knowledge and power and economic superiority is still maintained not allowing the underdeveloped countries to come forward. ICTs are also responsible in an on-going masculine discourse development. ICTs ignore finance problems such as recurrent costs of computer servicing and training and are still intent on supplying rather than the demand side.

The turning point of historys great events Essay Example for Free

The turning point of historys great events Essay History is full of incidences which have altered its course. One such incident that has altered the course of present politics and possibly the course of international politics and international law is the horrendous act of terrorism of 9/11. In its wake the incident has left consequences that are still affecting the course of politics and international laws. United States actions against Iraq, Afghanistan and even its relation with the country of Western Europe have been affected in the aftermath of 9/11.   It seemed that United States identified Iraq as a potential threat to its policies in the Middle East and promoter of terrorism and despite UN resollution chose to go it alone and used a new doctrine of pre-emptive attack to what it saw as a potential threat from weapons of mass destruction (WMD) stockpiled by Iraq. Unfortunately no WMD were found in Iraq but the doctrine of pre-emptive strike will be cited by many governments to attack their weaker neighbors. Israel was the only country to have used this doctrine to attack Iraqi under construction nuclear power plant. The United Nations and United States had condemned Israel for this action. The War on Terrorism also created dilemmas for International law as United States refused to recognize Taliban [Borelli, 2005]   and Al-Qaeda suspects as Prisoners of War[1] (POW) and classified them as Illegal combatant[2] denying them status of both common criminal and POWs creating problems such as Guantanamo Bay, CIA interrogation Centers and legal status of prisoners.. This has created a problem for the International law[3] and also a precedent for many other countries to cite in defense of their own illegal activities. The racial profiling and early version of Patriot Act once again discriminated between different type of US citizens, authorizing illegal wire tapping and invasion of privacy of law abiding Arab Americans which made the people recall Japanese internment during the Second World War. The attack on the World Trade Center had won United States worldwide sympathy and this opportunity could have been used to strengthen international laws against terrorism. The US government actions have alienated many of our traditional allies in Europe. The world is still not free of terrorism and the coalition of willing formed in the wake of 9/11 has not yet achieved its objectives. The United States citizens and Congress which gave almost a unanimous support to war on terrorism and War in Iraq now find that they have been misled by the government and have said so with their votes in the Congressional elections. It seems that the incident of 9/11 which had won us worldwide sympathy and desire to act against terrorism has resulted in a much divided and threatened world due to our actions since 9/11. One thing is certain; the incident of 9/11 has altered the course of the history. The new system will hopefully give more importance to international bodies and international laws [Gasser, 2002] to resolve dispute and the threats posed by terrorism. Alternatively, the consequences could further divide the world and may even create wider conflict in the Middle East and even more problems for the world peace. Bibliography Borelli, S. A Good Idea :: essays research papers

A Good Idea   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I have lost my faith. At times I even call myself an atheist. I do not believe in god and have not since just recently. My mother was a kind, strong willed, caring individual. She also had cancer. My mother became a symbol of fighting this disease because she fought off six reoccurrences in eight years. God decided she should die. If there was a â€Å"God† then why would he let someone who was an inspiration to so many, leave us? I just do not understand. This movie however was able to reach that little part of me that still wonders if there is a being out there that watches us all. Writer/director Kevin Smith accomplishes this by doing away with all the religious jargon and approaches it in a whole new way in his latest comedy Dogma. This work of comedic genius follows Bethany, a Planned Parenthood employee who has lost all faith in god, on her holy crusade to save the world from being blinked out of existence in of all places, New Jersey. Smith takes a new approach to an old subject with Dogma. His ability to transform ideas into scripts and plotlines makes him one of the most brilliant and artistic writer/directors of his generation. Smith takes the religion of Christianity and explains it in ways that seem to bring it to life. Jesus is no longer just a character in a bible story; he appears to us as man who suddenly carries the weight of the world on his back. The holy icon is given friends, personality, and even a sense of humor. Smith is able to accomplish all of this without actually presenting Jesus as a character. The main idea of this movie is presented in a scene that unfolds in a strip joint of all places. Serendipity, a muse, explains to Bethany the explicit argument of the movie: I have issues with anyone that treats God like a burden instead of a blessing like some Catholics. You people don’t celebrate your faith, your morn it. It's not about who's right or wrong. No denomination's nailed it yet, because they're all too self-righteous to realize that it doesn't matter what you faith in, just that you have faith. Your hearts are in the right place, but your brains gotta wake up. This statement encompasses everything Smith wanted to say. I happen to agree with him.

Mission readiness

Proper gear accountability can range from the most important pieces of gear such as my rifle all the way to my Several. The units and individual soldier to whom this gear Is Issued are held accountable for maintaining them. Losing a piece of gear could have repercussions ranging from payment for lost property to legal action. Losing or not keeping up with your gear and equipment results to you not being mission ready. That is the last thing you want to happen to you or your unit. Especially, when you are a part of something important as GRAFF. The purpose of the GRAFF is to have units who are able to quickly deploy and execute decisive-action operations in support of combat operations and in some cases provide humanitarian assistance. If my unit was miraculously called up to deploy anywhere I would've been the one to hold the whole operation up. Most likely I would stay behind and have someone who has their tuff together take my spot.I have to stay in that mindset that we can be anywh ere at a moment notice. That was bad on my part that I let myself get so careless when it come to my equipment. Before I went home that day I should've checked for all of my PIP because that's exactly what I would do down range. I have to start getting Into the battle rhythm now of checking my equipment every time I take It out Into the field, range, or for something simply as a detail.

Cancer Diary of Osteosarcoma

SUBMITTED BY: ARAGAW GEBEYEHU SUBMITTED: DR. FLORES ROZAS DATE OF SUBMISSION: 04/16/1801/26/12 My name is osteosarcoma. I am highly malignant tumor of mesenchymal origin and the second most common primary malignant bone tumor .I am originate from mesenchymal cells. I have spindle shape and hyper chromatic nucleus. I have been formed when osteoblasts cells secreted malignant osteoid. I am like osteoblast (bone forming) cells, but I cannot make strong matrix like them. You know that osteoblasts originate from immature mesenchymal stem cells. So my ancestors are from those. But I am already modified in to osteosarcoma cell. I can occur at any bones found in the body. I am more frequent at sites of the most rapid bone growth; those are extremities of long bones near metaphyseal growth plates. From the sites that I frequently choose ;distal and proximal end of femur (42%),proximal end of tibia(19%), proximal end of humerus (10%), pelvis skull and jaw(85%) and pelvis( 8%). I can be appearing 1 to 3 million people per year. Off course, I am rare compared to other types of cancer. I can attack any age as primary osteosarcoma but mostly between 10-25yrs. I can also come at older individuals as secondary osteosarcoma. I affect males little bit more than females. I am most common in patients with Fraumeni syndrome, Rothmund-Thomson syndrome, Bloom and Werner syndromes. Exposing to Paget disease and ionizing radiation give favorable conditions for me to develop our colony. Fig 1. Osteosarcoma genesis and osteogenesis When I was changing to osteosarcoma, there was a mutations of MDM2 amplifications which led to p53 gene inactivation. Another controller gen which is called retinoblastoma (RB) genes was also altered. I become safe because there is no more check point and control for me .But the normal bone cells have several check points in their cell cycle. In the presence of RB mutations I will occur at an incidence 500 times that of the normal population. Normal cells are always worrying for G1/S check point but I am not, because the p53 and Rb genes are already mutated (lost their function). I am preparing more DNA and for that I am also synthesizing mRNA and important proteins. During my replication time I gained chromosome number 1 and lost chromosome 9, 10 and 13. Till now I am successfully dividing and I am forming other similar cells. In near future I will have my own colony of cells and my own sarcoma tissues01//14/2014As usual I was preparing to divide but the proteins detected a damage in my DNA. The damage was too big to be repaired. Even if it is bigger damage I will not go to programmed cell death called apoptosis. Because this is not my character. My only goal is to survive and proliferate more. This is my unique behavior. Of course I was not like this, I was following the normal path of cell cycle and programed cell death. This thing happened after I lost my DNA sequence that triggers cell death pathway.5/18/15Recently I got another mutations and my FOS and Jun proteins are up regulated. Those proteins are components of activator protein1 complex (AP-1). AP-1 his regulator of cell transcription. Now I am getting additional energy because my transcription regulators are out of service. I can proliferate freely and destroy bone cortex and extend towards bone marrow cavity and soon out wards towards adjacent soft tissues.10/17/15I am now thinking why not I visit other organs. I have information lung, liver and also other bones are the safe place and more fertile to me . When I become more organize, I can migrate and live there. I am already resistant to programed cell death (anoikis) and can exhibit anchorage independent growth (AIG). Abnormal integrin? v6, Rho, ATPase e.g. Racl and Cdc42 upregulated p13 kinases which in turn inhibited proapoptotic factor Bad and this protected me from apoptosis even when I am not attached to any membrane. Now I have bigger size with hypoxic and acidic environment. So I need supporting blood vessels to obtain oxygen and nutrients I have done angiogenesis for my sustained growth and further metastasis. My intrinsic conditions have to lead to stimulation of von Hippie Lindau protein. It releases hypoxia inducible factor-1? (HIF-?)which further up regulates several VEGF gene such as VEGF A through VEGF E. This further releases Nitric oxide (NO) from endothelial cells and results in vasodilation and increased vascular permeability. By doing those processes I got leaky and irregular vasculature.3/14/16 I am starting flight to lung. I am using integrin proteins, which found in my surface ,in attaching to matrix proteins (fibronectin). For my signal transduction and interaction with other cells, I use integrin along with ezrin protein ,foal adhesion kinase (FAK),protein kinase C (PKC) and Rho GTPase. They also help me for my conformational changes. Besides to this matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) are helping me in my sojourn through blood vessels and tissue renewal process. Now I have reached the lungs and I am growing, multiplying and consuming all nutrients. It is like as I heard .I like it.10/10/2016Today, the patient could not resist me .He took me to hospital. Because I create sever pain and swelling. I was diagnosed by radiograph as high grade sarcoma. Additionally they did CT scan, RI and biopsy and confirmed my stage. They are now discussing to fight against me.Yes they have started chemotherapy (high dose methotrexate, doxorubicin and cisplatin). I have been fighting against those drugs for the last three months and I am now getting old, starving and feeling weaker day by day. Oh those drugs become treble for me. Methotrexate is a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, it can block folic acid supply which is needed for my RNA and DNA synthesis. Doxorubicin which is also a drug that interact with my DNA and inhibits biosynthesis of macro molecules. Cisplatin causes damage to my DNA. I have to create solutions, because I am no longer able to make RNA efficiently. But I am struggling to continue my life. I got another mutations which is alteration in reduced folate reductase (RFC) protein Leu291pro.Yes I did it. This alteration unable carrier to transport methotrexate towards me .Besides to this, membrane pump-glycoproteins (P-gp) is also helping me with pumping out these drugs. Due to this I start dividing and spreading slowly but steadily. Other worse situations are happening to me, they are using high energy rays (x-rays) to kill me. I am no longer able to grow. I am shrinking. 4/14/18The worst thing are happened on me. Now, they are performing surgery and removing me as cancerous tissue. I was sending my daughters to afar to lung. By myself I am highly depressed and weak due to huge loss my colony. I try to grow and spread again by my reserve soldiers and by those immigrant members. They are still in dilemma to administer chemotherapeutic agent after surgery. The people are always struggling to combat me and other friends. If they post-surgery chemotherapy no more survival .I say good bye I will not be there anymore. REFERENCEBiomarkers in osteosarcoma, Colin Kong, M.S and Marc F. How to Use the French Expression NImporte Quoi

How to Use the French Expression N'Importe Quoi The French expression nimporte quoi,  pronounced  neh(m) puhr t(eu) kwa,  means literally no matter what. But in use, the sense is anything, whatever or nonsense. Nimporte quoi has a few different uses. Most often it means anything, as in: Je ferais nimporte quoi pour gagner.   Id do anything to win. Informally, nimporte quoi  or cest du nimporte quoi are used to convey  nonsense. A less literal translation would be What the heck are you talking about?! or the exclamatory Rubbish! Though not a perfect equivalent, nimporte quoi is also probably the best translation  for whatever, when its used as an expression of dismissal. Examples Ce magasin vend tout et nimporte quoi.   This store sells anything and everything.Nà ©coute pas Philippe. Il dit nimporte quoi.   Dont listen to Philippe. Hes talking nonsense. /  Hell say anything!Il ferait nimporte quoi pour obtenir le rà ´le. Hed do anything.  /  Hed go to any lengths to get the part.Tu dis vraiment nimporte quoi  ! Youre talking absolute nonsense !  Cest un bon investissement. Thats a good investment.Nimporte quoi  !  (familiar) Dont talk rubbish / nonsense !Je ferais nimporte quoi pour elle.  Ã‚  Id do anything for her.  Ã‚  Comme qualità ©, cest nimporte quoi.  Ã‚  Ã‚  In terms of quality / As for quality, its rubbish. Almost Famous Theres a well-known saying in French popular culture that goes:  Cest en faisant nimporte quoi, quon devient nimporte qui  (or ...que lon devient...). This expression means literally, Its by doing nonsensical things that you become nonsensical, but its better expressed as Its by doing anything that you become anyone, and its the motto of French prankster and video maker Rà ©mi Gaillard, who calls himself Nimporte qui. The phrase is a play on the French proverb Cest en forgeant quon devient forgeron (the equivalent of Practice makes perfect, but literally Its by forging that one becomes a blacksmith). Part of the NImporte Family of Expressions Nimporte quoi  is a popular  combining  form of the French indefinite expression  nimporte, which literally means no matter. It can be followed by an  interrogative pronoun  like quoi, an  interrogative adjective,  or an interrogative adverb in order to designate an unspecified person, thing, or characteristic. NImporte With Interrogative Pronouns Interrogative pronouns imply the question who, what, and which one, or qui, quoi, and lequel / laquelle / lesquels / lesquelles. These phrases can function as subjects,  direct objects, or  indirect objects. 1) Nimporte qui   anyone, anybody   Nimporte qui peut le faire.   Anyone can do it.Tu peux inviter nimporte qui.   You can invite anyone.Ne viens pas avec nimporte qui.   Dont come with just anyone.   2)  Nimporte quoi   anything Nimporte quoi maiderait.   Anything would help me.Il lira nimporte quoi.   Hell read anything.Jà ©cris sur nimporte quoi.   I write on anything. 3) Nimporte lequel,  laquelle   any (one) Quel livre veux-tu  ?   Which book do you want?Nimporte lequel.   Any one. / Any of them.Aimes-tu les films  ?   Do you like movies?Oui, jaime nimporte lesquels.   Yes, I like any at all. Nimporte With  Interrogative Adjectives In this case,  nimporte  is combined with the interrogative adjectives  quel or quelle, which pose  the question what. This combined form produces  nimporte quel / quelle, which translates to  any.  Nimporte quel  is used in front of a noun to indicate a nonspecific choice, as in: Nimporte quel, quelle any Jaimerais nimporte quel livre.   Id like any book.Nimporte quelle dà ©cision sera...   Any decision will be... Nimporte with Interrogative Adverbs Here nimporte is combined with  interrogative adverbs that pose the questions  how, when, and where. These indicate that the how, when, or where is unspecified and are translated as: (in) any way, anytime, and anywhere. 1)  Nimporte comment   (in) any way   Fais-le nimporte comment.   Do it any way / any old way. (Just do it!)Nimporte comment, il part ce soir.   Hes leaving tonight no matter what. 2) Nimporte quand   anytime Ecrivez-nous nimporte quand.   Write to us anytime. 3) Nimporte oà ¹Ã‚   wherever, anywhere Nous irons nimporte oà ¹.   Well go wherever / anywhere.

Barack Obama - Fifth Weekly Transition Address

Barack Obama Fifth President-Elect Weekly Transition Address Broadcast 6 December 2008Good morning. Yesterday, we received another painful reminder of the serious economic challenge our country is facing when we learned that 533,000 jobs were lost in November alone, the single worst month of job loss in over three decades. That puts the total number of jobs lost in this recession at nearly two million. But this isn’t about numbers. It’s about each of the families those numbers represent. It’s about the rising unease and frustration that so many of you are feeling during this holiday season. Will you be able to put your kids through college? Will you be able to afford health care? Will you be able to retire with dignity and security? Will your job or your husband’s job or your daughter’s or sons jobs be the next ones cut? These are the questions that keep so many Americans awake at night. But its not the first time these questions have been asked though. Weve faced difficult times before, times when our economic destiny seemed to be slipping out of our hands. And at each moment, we have risen to meet the challenge, as one people united by a sense of common purpose. And I know that Americans can rise to the moment once again. But we need action and action now. Thats why Ive asked my economic team to develop an economic recovery plan for both Wall Street and Main Street that will help save or create at least two and a half million jobs, while rebuilding our infrastructure, improving our schools, reducing our dependence on oil, and saving billions of dollars. We won’t do it the old Washington way. We won’t just throw money at the problem. We’ll measure progress by the reforms we make and the results we achieve by the jobs we create, by the energy we save, by whether America is more competitive in the world. Today, Im announcing a few key parts of my plan. First, we will launch a massive effort to make public buildings more energy-efficient. Our government now pays the highest energy bills in the world. We need to change that. We need to upgrade our federal buildings by replacing old heating systems and installing efficient light bulbs. That won’t just save you, the American taxpayer, billions of dollars each year. It will put people back to work. Second, we will create millions of jobs by making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s. We’ll invest your precious tax dollars in new and smarter ways, and we’ll set a simple rule: Use it or lose it. If a state doesn’t act quickly to invest in roads and bridges in their communities, they’ll lose the money. Third, my economic recovery plan will launch the most sweeping effort to modernize and upgrade school buildings that this country has ever seen. We will repair broken schools, make them energy-efficient, and put new computers in our classrooms. Because to help our children compete in a 21st century economy, we need to send them to 21st century schools. As we renew our schools and highways, we’ll also renew our information superhighway. It is unacceptable that the United States ranks 15th in the world in broadband adoption. Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online, and they’ll get that chance when I’m President because that’s how we’ll strengthen America’s competitiveness in the world. In addition to connecting our libraries and schools to the Internet, we must also ensure that our hospitals are connected to each other through the Internet. That is why the economic recovery plan I’m proposing will help modernize our health care system; and that won’t just save jobs, it will save lives. We will make sure that every doctor’s office and hospital in this country is using cutting edge technology and electronic medical records so that we can cut red tape, prevent medical mistakes, and help save billions of dollars each year. These are just a few parts of the economic recovery plan that I will be rolling out in the coming weeks. When Congress reconvenes in January, I look forward to working with them to pass a plan immediately. We need to act with the urgency this moment demands to save or create at least two and a half million jobs so that the nearly two million Americans who’ve lost them know that they have a future. And that’s exactly what I intend to do as President of the United States. Thanks for listening. Source:Â  https://www.loc.gov/

Business case Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Business case - Essay Example By ensuring that blind people are able to transact with the bank just like the other people, the bank will bridge the gap in between people who are physically impaired and the ones’ that are not. Consequently, it will enable the bank to broaden its customer base and improve its profitability. The purpose of this activity is to act ethically responsible and allow equal opportunities to the physically challenged people (ProTrain). It will help to bring such people into the mainstream of the population in terms of business transactions. Hence, it will be a source of business of the bank. Furthermore, it will help such people to avail the facilities of the bank to their own advantage. Since, there is a strong need in the market to cater to the blind customers the bank has decided to introduce a new system which will ease the process of banking for the blind people. Thus, it will ensure that both the people and the bank have mutual benefits. Previously the bank did not employ any special routines to cater to the blind people. The need was felt to facilitate these people and give them an opportunity to run their own accounts, manage their own funds and monitor their accounts’ progress by personally checking their bank statements and other details. Thus, a need arose for a special procedure that will be able to fulfill the needs of the blind customers. As a result the bank has decided to implement a system whereby all correspondence to the blind customers, i.e. their bank statements, terms and conditions statements, applications etc will be used using Braille. In the current business scenario blind people are not offered a self reliant solution for their banking needs. In order to conduct business they are usually assisted by someone and have to be explained whatever is being given to them. Therefore, without assistance it is impossible for the blind
